I think there are a couple of variables I did not include in the original post (and are not included in the NY Times piece). One, Radiohead is currently without a record contract, so they can do whatever they want.
Two, most of this album has already leaked, in fact I am listening to live versions of many of the tracks right now.
It will be very interesting to see if this will prove successful. I am an avid and longtime fan and have preordered the album for the price I would pay on iTunes, $10.

Radio Head is the first band to realize the CD is dead and should now be used as a marketing piece rather than a main source of income. They'll make tons of money on this.
